A large marshy area formed by the course of river Mincio upstream the city of Mantua. It consists of a myriad of stretches of water connected among them and flowing into the basin of the upper lake of Mantua. The area is covered with large canebrake formations, rich in hydrophilous vegetation in the open stretches of water. It is characterized by a considerable presence of nesting and wintering aquatic birds and birds of passage. The area has been declared wetland of international importance according to the Ramsar Convention.
