Saltworks
Purposes
The 30-month project "Saltworks" involves the only saltworks situated in the program-area comprising Italy and Slovenia: the Cervia Saltworks, the Comacchio Saltworks, the Sečovlje Saltworks and the Strunjan Saltworks.
Basis of the „Saltworks" project is the will to strengthen the possible synergy between growth and environmental protection. As a matter of fact the general aim of the project concerns the enhancement of the saltworks, their development and promotion from an eco-friendly perspective. In reference to the two italian saltworks in particular, it must be considered that they are situated in the Provinces of Ferrara and Ravenna, namely the areas where the most critical situations are registered as far as environmental protection is concerned: here the presence percentage of nature areas is under 20%, while in most of the areas of the program nature areas presence percentage is over 50%. The project aims to tackle the problem of the growth of these particular nature areas by availing itself of a group of experts for each area, in order to carry out a careful analysis of saltworks' features and to define the guidelines for the enhancement of the areas (WP2). The growth in the development and consequently in the use of the saltworks will be implemented through the conveying of good practices to each area by realizing pilot projects (WP3). From the tourist point of view the program-area has a huge potentiality, but it is necessary to stress that tourism flows often depend on the seasons: aim of this project is to tackle this problem too by organizing didactic activities for schools and didactic-scientific courses for university students (WP4) which could be carried out during "low season", e.g. from October to April. Another critical aspect concerns employment: although the situation is quite better in the program-areas than in the national context they belong to, it has not yet achieved the objectives established by the Lisbon Strategy. Particularly through the enhancement of the saltworks from a tourist perspective it is intended to start courses and workshops for children that will take place all the year round and that require a qualified staff (WP4). Many other activities included in the project require the employment of qualified people: one of them is, for instance, the creation of a team of experts for the analysis of the territory, such as biologists, architects and tourism experts, with preference for young people.
