Pilot Projects

Four pilot projects will be realized with the aim of improving the use of the saltworks from an eco-friendly point of view.

In the Comacchio Saltworks the Red Tower - a building dating back to the 16th century with a star-shaped layout and bastions (knocked down in 1940) - also known as Forte S. Giuseppe will be renovated. The tower is maybe the only building existing before the creation of the saltworks, and it was used to accommodate soldiers first, and then financiers. The pilot project is intended to recover it within the naturalistic routes which can be organized in the saltworks, and to make it a point for birdwatching. To renovate the tower will also make it possible to create new itineraries by turning it into the point of departure and of arrival of future routes. Regarding its historical and cultural value and its strategical position for practicing birdwatching, its enhancement is perfectly consistent with the goals pursued by the project.

In the Cervia Saltworks the pilot project aims at recovering and transforming the old Hexagonal Tower of the Waterworks into point of departure for a cultural itinerary within the saltworks. The tower, which is in fact no longer in use, is optimally situated near the Saltworks Visitor Center in the ancient Via Bova: by recovering it also the historical contents of the route will be introduced. To achieve the same goal it is intended to realize a mooring area in the old canal connecting Old Cervia to the sea. From the embarkation area it will be possible to cover a distance of about 800 meters with electric boats to reach Old Cervia in the heart of the saltworks.

In the Sečovlje Saltworks the pilot project will lead to a more respectful use of the environment, so that visitors will be able to discover the beauty of the places visited and to enjoy every single detail without outside interference. For this reason a new 1,300 meters long itinerary will be placed parallel to the street which is reserved for motor vehicles and constitutes the only access, but distant enough to reduce noises to the minimum. The itinerary will be placed over the water and provided with a wooden fence: in order to respect environment, only some types of wood will be used, namely those resistant to bad weather conditions without chemical substances.

In the Strunjan Saltworks both the bank and the pedestrian access way will be rebuilt. A better use of the saltworks area, as well as the protection of its environment are the goals of the pilot project: indeed a sliding barrier will be placed in the lower edge of the harbor used by fishermen from Strunjan, in order to stop their boats from entering the protected area of the Chiusa lagoon. At the same time it is also intended to rebuild the whole little harbor for fishermen with a platform for their activities. It is in fact necessary to avoid the mooring of fishermen's boats to limit their activities and to preserve the inner side of the lagoon.
