Protected Areas in Queensland
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service was established in December 1998 and forms part of the Queensland Environment Protection Agency (EPA). It was created with its own charter and corporate identity to encourage greater community support and regard for parks and wildlife.
Queensland has a great diversity of landscapes, native plants and animals. Queensland's unique environmental values generate a great deal of economic activity and jobs throughout urban, regional and rural Queensland. In Queensland especially, the conservation of our outstanding natural assets provides many recreational opportunities and a wide variety of nature-based tourism experiences.
Queensland's national parks and other protected areas cover seven million hectares. The diverse environmental values which make up the World Heritage-listed areas of the Great Barrier Reef (www), the Wet Tropics rainforests, Fraser Island, the south-east Queensland temperate rainforests and the Riversleigh Fossil Field are vital to the long-term economic security of Queensland's tourism industry. Additionally, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is responsible for the management of 4 million hectares of state forest in Queensland.
Marine Parks
Marine parks are established over tidal lands and waters to protect and conserve special areas while allowing for the planned use of marine resources.
