Le aree protette in Queensland
Il Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Gestione delle Risorse (Department of Environment and Resource Management - DERM) si occupa della salvaguardia, protezione e gestione delle riserve naturali e ambientali nazionali per le generazioni presenti e future.
E' quindi responsabile della gestione delle risorse naturali e della legislazione in materia di salvaguardia dell'ambiente per conto del Governo del Queensland e collabora con il governo, le imprese, le industrie e le comunità locali per conservare valori naturali, migliorare la performance ambientale, ridurre l'inquinamento e promuovere comportamenti finalizzati alla gestione sostenibile delle risorse naturali.
Il Ministero fornisce supporto ai progetti del Governo per il futuro, partecipando all'iniziativa: Toward Q2: Tomorrow's Queensland (Verso Q2: il Queensland del domani).
Gli obiettivi principali del Ministero sono:
- implementare attività di recupero ambientale tramite l'Operazione Queenslander
- far fronte alla sfida del cambiamento climatico
- salvaguardare e valorizzare il patrimonio naturale nazionale, gli ecosistemi e il patrimonio culturale
- assicurare uno stabile e sicuro approvvigionamento d'acqua per il futuro del Queensland
- gestire in modo sostenibile le risorse del suolo del Queensland.
Parchi Marini
I Parchi Marini sono stati istituiti su terreni soggetti all'alta marea e su aree marine al fine di conservare e proteggere l'unicità di tali aree pur premettendo un utilizzo pianificato delle loro risorse.

Patrimonio Mondiale dell'Umanità
In Australia ci sono 16 aree appartenenti al Patrimonio Mondiale dell'Umanità. Cinque di esse si trovano nel Queensland, una delle aree a più alta concentrazione di biodiversità sulla terra.
