Protected Areas in Moldova
Legislation in Moldova secures the protection of areas valuable for the conservation of biodiversity only if they are listed in the Fund of the State Protected Natural Areas. In this respect, a serious drawback is the sole inclusion of publicly owned land.
At present the total area of natural areas protected by state makes up 1.96% of the territory and represents one of the lowest shares of natural protected areas of European countries.

Natural areas and objects protected by state (as of the year 2000) include:
* 5 Scientific Reserves: protected territories containing representative natural elements to protect and to preserve;
* 41 Landscape Reserves: natural complexes of a high scientific, ecological, recreational, aesthetic and educational value;
* 130 Monuments of Nature: natural objects of great scientific, cultural, aesthetic and historical value;
* 63 Nature Reserves
and other categories (Resources Reserves, Multifunctional Management Areas, Secular Trees etc.).

Natural protected areas form a network for the conservation of biological resources and genetic variety, its nucleus being scientific reserves (which occupy 29.4% of the total protected area) followed by landscape reserves (51.5%).
