Cogne and Aosta Valley
Only a little larger than 3000 km
2, Aosta Valley is the smallest and least populated Italian region (130,000 inhabitants). Crowned by the Alps’ highest summits, it is recognisable by its snow-covered summits and its perennial glaciers, its green pastures and impetuous streams bouncing on steep rocks, its picturesque stone-roofed villages, its industrious valley floor, and especially by Gran Paradiso National Park. Cogne, considered the capital town of Gran Paradiso National Park, is a fairytale-like mountain village of 1,400 people, which was able to preserve the looks and the characteristics of a genuine Alpine settlement. It faces the vast meadows of San Orso, covered with flowers in the summer and with snow in the winter. In the summer, numerous tourists appreciate its many hiking trails, whereas in the winter they enjoy its famous Nordic and Alpine skiing tracks, frozen waterfalls, and snowshoe hikes.
