Tuscan Archipelago: The European Union gave a significant recognition to the LIFE+ Montecristo Project

(Portoferraio, 20 Jun 14) The activities to fight the invasive alien species on the Pianosa and Montecristo islands, which were carried out for four and a half years by the partners of the LIFE+ Montecristo 2010 Project - namely the State Forestry Corps - Follonica Section, the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, ISPRA and Nemo Ltd. - led to the expected results, and also this year the absence of rats in the Montecristo island could be confirmed. Besides the excellent results, the project has been officially acknowledged by the European Commission, since it has been nominated among the finalists of the "Natura 2000 Awards 2014": this award was established by the European Commission to foster the best practices directed to the conservation of nature, to the commitment in the protection of biodiversity in the Natura 2000 sites, and to the long-term survival of Europe's most precious as well as threatened species and habitats.
