The reserve includes the last tract, between Monfalcone and Grado, and the mouth of the river Isonzo, which is the second river of the region for its length (140 km. of which 99 in Slovenia).
The area is characterized by scenic marshy landscape and lagoons and hosts a rich flora and fauna; special protection is afforded to the 1,300 hectares of the island of Cona. The shoals, the sand-banks and the marshes with reed thickets occupy a large area. The reserve is internationally reknown as the habitat of 250 species, of which 50 are nesting species, of birds, mostly aquatic birds.
