The protected area has been founded to preserve a seminatural area of floristic and avifauna significance. Although it is situated near a highly urbanized area, the ponds host remarkable flora and fauna species. The  ponds of Focognano, as well as the Local Protected Area "Podere La Querciola", are situated in the plain of  Sesto F.no, eastern part of the wider plain extending between Florence and Pistoia, and belong to the municipal territory of Campi Bisenzio.
