The International Co-ordinating Council of UNESCO's MAB Programme gave two significant recognitions to Italy, on the occasion of its 26th meeting which took place in Jönköping, East Vättern landscape in Sweden.
The Council definitively approved the designation of the Italian-french Transboundary Biosphere Reserve of the Mont-Viso / Monviso Biosphere Area, and for the future it has strongly suggested that such a proposal could be used as an example for the next transboundary candidacies.
Monviso has therefore become the 13th Transboundary Site of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of the MAB Programme, the second in France (after that of the Vosges du nord - Pfälzerwald, with Germany) and the first in Italy.
During the same meeting also La Sila has been registered as the 10th Italian Biosphere Reserve within UNESCO's World Network of Sites of Excellence. (Read more in Italian)
