Sea of clouds on the Caldera (photo by PN Caldera de Taburiente)

The National Park is characterized by the Caldera, a huge 8 km wide, cauldron-like circle, whose geomorphology was shaped by multiple volcanic eruptions, large landslides and the erosive force of water and time, which turned it into a steep landscape with a difference in altitude of almost 2,000 metres. In this environment a wide variety of plant and animal species developed, including many endemisms of the Canary islands.
