People say that this place is not really a dead land but rather a recently born one. Although the rough landscapes appear desolate, they have been colonized by the vegetal world. The main colour shades are the blacks and dark reds of lapillis and sand, and the dark tones of basaltic lava, dotted with different colours by the many lichen species. The biological richness of this place must however not be overlooked, as well as the large number of plant and animal endemisms.
