The ZSC covers about 1721 hectares and is completely located within the Municipality of Taipana, just over 1 km from the Julian Prealps Nature Park. River Bianco runs north-south along the eastern part of the site, until it flows into River Natisone. The hydrographic network is well developed, thanks to a rich system of springs which are present on the slopes of Gran Monte. There are no inhabited centres within the site, but many are located on its borders, such as Monteaperta, Cornappo, Montemaggiore and Platischis, with a very developed trail network.
