Meanders of River Stella (photo by Stefano Zanini)

The natural riparian vegetation of a spring river

This site, located in the final stretch of the Stella river, is extremely connected from an ecological point of view to the river mouth rushes and to the Natura 2000 network, that involves the whole lagoon. It is also ecologically related to the upper part of the river included in the ZSC Stella Springs. These are functional links since the river is situated in three different ZSC, with separate parts. In addition to the presence of amphibians such as the Italian agile frog (Rana latastei) and the Italian crested newt (Triturus carnifex), there are also some important fish species, including the Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii). Among the bird species, the presence in the reproductive period of the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), the little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus) and the red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) should be remarked. Recently, there has been an increase throughout the Northeast of Italy of the Phalacorocrax pygmaeus. While the more open environments and the bog wrecks contain species of Circus cyaneus and C aeruginosus in the feeding phase.
