The area of Contrafforte Pliocenico (Pliocene Mountain Spur), declared Site of Community Importance and Special Protection Area (SCI/SPA IT4050012) within Natura 2000 Network, is also safeguarded by the Regional Landscape Territorial Plan. It consists of a 15km long complex formed by rocky outcrops of Pliocene sandstone, transversal to the valleys of Setta, Savena, Zena, and Idice and extending from Sasso Marconi to Monte delle Formiche. The Nature Reserve covers an area of a more limited size (about 750 ha) including the arenaceous spurs of the woodlands forming its most immediate context, and a few cultivated areas.
