A relict of xerothermic area rich in rare species, it represents a typical well-preserved evidence of the Wurmian Quaternary glaciers' deposits on the main bottom of the valley.
In the past, the Côte de Gargantua was interpreted either as an artificial accumulation or as a terminal moraine of the Balteo glacier. Nowadays it is considered to be the lateral moraine of the glacier descending the current watershed of the stream Gressan, along the Pila basin.
