The Nature Reserve, established by the Region Emilia-Romagna in 2010, extends for about 109 hectares in the municipalities of Torrile and Trecasali, in the northeastern side of the Province of Parma and in part of the Lipu Oasis of Torrile, which was established in 1988 to help the black-winged stilt nest, thanks to some activists who worked in the Lipu section of Parma). The Reserve and the Oasis are situated within a larger protected area that is listed among the SCIs and SPAs of the Natura 2000 Network. In particular, the protected area safeguards a wetland located on the left side of the Parma Stream, near the settling tanks of the Eridania sugar factory, and a few kilometers far from the karst springs of Commenda, among the last springs of Parma's upper plain.
