According to someone, the place name could derive from the Latin Pecunius, name of a Roman patrician who, in 1st century AD, would have founded a small rural village. According to another interpretation, it could be linked to the term "pecunia", meaning in Latin money, richness, as it referred to the local lands offering profitable harvesting.
