Oratory of Sassomassiccio

The oratory is consecrated to the Assumption of St. Mary. Hermit and former militia captain for the House of Este Vincenzo Muzzarelli built it in 1695 on the ruins of a 11th-13th century chapel. Muzzarelli abandoned the military career in 1690 and, under the name of brother Antonio Francesco, lived here for 29 years, sustaining himself with alms and prayer.
