Before the year 1000, Pizzoferrato did not exist. However, in the surroundings of the modern town, there were three small settlements called "Pizzi".
They were Pitius Superior (Upper Pizzo), currently Monte della Rocca, Pitius Medium (Middle Pizzo), today Rocca Fonte Maggiore, and Pitus Inferior (Lower Pizzo), today Roccarsa. It is still possible to see the ruins of these three settlements. The three Pizzi were inhabited by SHEPHERDS: during the winter, they used to move to Apulia with their families and animals, while during the summer they used these mountains for grazing. This was transhumant sheep breeding. At that time, these places were not cultivated, but entirely covered with woods: beech woods, Turkey oak and fir tree woods. Then, transhumant shepherds started to cultivate the fields and became also farmers. There are two hyphotheses about the birth of Pizzoferrato.
