Baone (PD)

The castle guarded the eastern access to the city of Este (the other side was controlled by another castle on the summit of Mt. Cero, that overlooked the road connecting Este, Cinto and Lozzo; in the middle, the fortification of Calaone protected the city). The story of the castle of Baone is closely linked to the destiny of the Castle of Este, the political centre from which the marquises wielded their power; by the middle of the 17th century it had been completely destroyed, and the space once enclosed by the wall was turned into a vineyard.
