Parco Naturale del Gran Bosco di Salbertrand

Mountain Potatoes

The varieties cultivated by Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Park Authority are Agria (yellow flesh and peel) and Desirée (yellow flesh and red peel).

The Park Authority is member of the Mountain Potato Producer Association of the Province. The fine tubers have been included in Paniere della Provincia di Torino, a label created to group together all the agri-foodstuffs and agricultural products of the provincial territory belonging to the local historical tradition and produced with the local raw material of the cottage industry. For this reason, they represent a potentiality for the local development.
The cultivation of potatoes in the mountains guarantees top-quality products with a good size and, above all, with no prevention treatment or plant protection service.
As a matter of fact, the altitude and exposure of the fields combined with the considerable temperature range between the day and the night hinder the proliferation of any infection or attack from other damaging pathologies; the two-year field rotation guarantees the richness of the soil in mineral salts and does not require the use of organic and chemical fertilizers. Moreover, the chosen cultivation areas are situated in a protected area and are thus subject to environmental monitoring: this is a further guarantee providing a value added to the fact that the product has obtained the "mountain potato" label.
