La via della pece

The ancient art of resin extraction in the forests of Sila National Park

From the book, it is possible to understand that the extraction of resin in the forests of the Sila was of great historical importance: the resin was object of trade, but also of raids by the Greeks, the Romans, and other invaders, who used it to build their fleets. Resin was one of the great resources of the Sila together with sheep breeding and forestry for which, around the plateau, monasteries began to flourish: Benedictine monasteries with Corazzo and S. Maria della Matina, Cistercian monasteries with Sambucina, Frigillo and Calabromaria, Basilian monasteries with Patirion and Florerse con Gioacchino.
