Welcome to the Città di Forlì C.A.I. mountain hut
In the heart of Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna National Park, on the line of the ridge binding Tuscany and Romagna, along the GEA Route you will find our mountain hut.
It is an accommodation point belonging to the Grande Escursione Appenninica GEA 00
, the Alta Via dei Parchi, the Sacred Forests Path and the Bridle Path.
The Mountain Hut
The Mountain Hut is situated at 1,452m in Prati della Burraia and it can be reached by car from Passo della Calla. About two kilometers beyond a parking area you will find a traffic sign leading to the mountain hut's parking area, where a path begins which will lead you to us in about 5 minutes.
The Mountain Hut offers:
- Guides and amateur astronomers for day and night hikes
- Snowshoes and poles for rent
- Conference hall
- Local traditional cooking
- 44 beds in rooms with 1-2-3-4 beds
The Park develops along the Apennine ridge between Tuscany and Romagna, rapidly descending on the slope of Romagna and gradually on the slope of Tuscany up to the large valley bottom formed by the river Arno.
The landscape is characterized by sedimentary rocks, alpine prairies, mixed forests. The highest summits are Mt. Falco (1,667 meters above sea level), which can be reached from the mountain hut in 50 minutes, and the Mt. Falterona (1,654 meters above sea level).
Visits to Capo d'Arno and Lago degli Idoli are recommended.
The Sacred Forests
From the mountain hut you can easily reach the Hermitage of Camaldoli in about 3 to 4 hours. Another ancient and sacred place is the Lago degli Idoli, where etruscan and celtic votive offerings dating back to thousands of years ago were found. It takes one day to reach the Sanctuary of La Verna, where Saint Francis of Assisi had the Sacred Stigmata. It is worth seeing the valuable "Robbiana Terracotta" and the interesting joints of the Penna Mount (from the stone bed of St. Francis). Above the Sanctuary there is the centuries-old beech forest.
Flora and Fauna
The ridge around the mountain hut offers visitors many observation opportunities in what can be defined as a real casket of biodiversities. Flora's most representative elements are connected with the high mountains and the glacial period of 20,000 years ago: Narcissus-flowered anemone, purple mountain saxifrage, cranberries.
Among the animals there are: the peregrine falcon, the European Honey Buzzard, the Eurasian Eagle-Owl, the golden eagle, the deer, the fallow deer, the roe deer, the wolf.
