Trail of the Caves Old Dam

  • Trail Conditions: On foot
  • Duration: about 20 minutes
  • Difficulty Level: rather steep trail
  • Length: 0.6 km
  • Difference in height: 142m

Itinerary: square downstream the "old dam" q. 343; upper entrance Grotte Vecchia Diga (Caves Old Dam) q. 485.

Advice: in some stretches the trail may be slippery above all during (and after) rainy days. Do not leave the trail for the presence of a rather steep slope. Be careful not to cause the fall of stones from the trail.

Description of the itinerary: the trail develops with 17 hairpin bends on the orographic right side of Cellina, leading to the entrance of the caves. On the opposite rocky wall (left bank), the stratification of the calcareous rocks forming this stretch of ravine is well evident; in the valley bottom, giant's kettles of various size and at various conservation stages.
The vegetation along the trail includes heath and rhododendron, usually growing at higher altitudes. This depends on the thermal inversion and on diversified climatic conditions between the slopes exposed to the north and to the south.

N.B.:
Grotte Vecchia Diga (Caves Old Dam) can be visited only by previous booking and together with a tour guide.
