Alicudi: The Island of Fire and Cold Air Fumaroles

The island of Alicudi is the emerged section of a volcanic system developing for over 1,000m under sea level and emerging for 675m. The vegetation is dominated by garigue characterized by rock rose. The island is covered with shrubs and bushes resisting wind and saltiness, evergreen and typical of the Mediterranean maquis. The rocky coasts are colonized by a pioneer vegetation specialized to life in environments strongly influenced by the sea.
