Itinerary N - Km 48 - Regia Mandria di Chivasso, Dora Baltea, and the 19th century Hydraulic Works

  • Trail Conditions: By bike
  • Interest: Flora, Wildlife, Bird Watching, Geology, Panorama, Hystory, Photography

This itinerary gives the opportunity to explore the territory in the north-east of Chivasso, mainly flat and used for agricultural purposes, and leads to the southernmost section of the morainic hill system of Canavese, rich in chestnut tree woodlands and erbaluce vineyards. It is a territory rich in irrigation ditches (Naviglio d'Ivrea, Depretis, del Rotto, Cavour, and Farini Channels) built from the Middle Ages to the 19th century to enable or increase the rice production in eastern Piedmont, and characterized by the presence of Dora Baltea, transporting into the river Po the cold water of the glaciers of Valle d'Aosta. Besides Mazzè Castle, built in a dominating position at the top of the hill, the complex of Regia Mandria di Chivasso is very interesting.
