Ridge trekking on the border between Lazio and Abruzzo from the Iorio refuge to the Monte Tranquillo Sanctuary
The ridge marks the regional border between Abruzzo and Lazio and offers an open view of the Comino Valley, the Sangro Valley and the Marsicano and Meta mountain groups and dominates immense forests including the UNESCO heritage old-growth forest of Coppo del Principe.
Traveling through the comfortable Vallone di Peschio di Iorio, the itinerary becomes steeper in Valcallano, but still on an easy path. You then reach the small Iorio refuge and the walk along the ridge begins. Passing through Picco La Rocca, La Rocca, Monte della Strega and Monte Pietroso you reach the Monte Tranquillo pass and the small church of the Sanctuary of the same name. You return to the valley in the beautiful beech forest of the Bosco della Difesa di Pescasseroli.
